I Want to Give Birth. Do I Have to Quit My Job or School ?
Pregnancy, Childbirth, and School
Will I be expelled if I become pregnant?
Before coming to Japan or when entering school, you may have been told that you would be expelled if you became pregnant. However, schools are not allowed to expel international students due to pregnancy. If you find out that you are pregnant, talk to your teacher or school staff immediately. If you miss school without explaining that you are pregnant, or if you cannot afford to pay your tuition, you may be expelled for that reason.
What should I do if I can't go to school because I'm sick from my pregnancy or from giving birth?
If you are expelled from school because you are absent from school often or for a long period of time due to pregnancy and childbirth, you may lose your residence status as a “Student” or you may not be able to renew your status. Explain to the school that you are pregnant, rather than being absent without any explanation. Schools are not allowed to expel international students because of pregnancy. Consult first. If your school asks you to leave school because of pregnancy, refuse to do so if you want to keep studying.
Can I work while I am on leave?
The status of residence as a "student" allows you to work 28 hours a week if you apply and you are granted permission. If you are enrolled at school and maintain status of residence as “student” , 28 hours a week of work can be permitted. However, if you take a leave of absence due to pregnancy or childbirth and change your status to “Temporary Visitor” or "Designated Activity (without work permit) ", you will not be allowed to work at all.
Schools are not allowed to expel their students due to a pregnancy or childbirth. A recommended course of action is to consult with a trusted teacher or member of the staff first.
